ABOUT
Everyone nows LEGO, with the small bricks you can build everything that’s is on your mind and fantasy.
CREATOR
The official creator of the Lego Group is Ole Kirk Christiansen, he invented the little bricks in 1932 long time ago.
What starts as a tool for kids to build up their fantasy became also a grown up thing.

RULES | RESTRICTIONS
I think there is only one rule: Use the bricks to create your own lego world

COMMENT
Maybe this example is a little bit obvious, but i think Lego is a good example of open design.
Because they invented a platform that all kind of people can use and own.
I think it is more than a toy for children it could also be art.

ABOUT: Woolen blanket collection by Icelandic design collective Vík Prjónsdóttir.

CREATOR: VÍK PRJÓNSDÓTTIR consists of Egill Kalevi Karlsson, Thurídur Rós Sigurthorsdóttir, Hrafnkell Birgisson, Brynhildur Pálsdóttir and Gudfinna Mjöll Magnúsdóttir, five Icelandic designers who work with product design, art, fashion and food design.

RULES: All the pieces in the collection are inspired in some way or another from Icelandic customs, mythology and the country’s characteristic climate.

COMMENTS: Collection is beautiful and the same time playful which I really like. The blankets seems to be very high quality and handmade and I would definitely buy one of those to myself.

ABOUT: Dutch designers Daphna Laurens have created a series of storage containers that partially conceal their contents behind metal grilles. The covers can be separated from the bowls to fill them, or they can be used singly as open containers.

CREATOR: Daphna Laurens

RULES: Using material; aluminium and cork to create a series of storage containers.

COMMENTS: I think this is a really clever and nice idea to combine three different materials by creating a totally new kind of containers.

These tools by Cheng Guo are controlled by simple mouth movements like chewing and blowing
The Mouth Factory includes a drill, a lathe and machines for rotational moulding and vacuum forming.

CREATOR
The Mouth Factory is created by Cheng Guo and was his graduation project for the Royal College of Art.

RULES /RESTRICTIONS
Blow or chew with you mouth that is the only way to make it work.

COMMENTS

I really like this project because it reminds me of a brace i had when i was jonger.
And it looks really scary because the tools are so big, but you can make nice things just because of chewing.

ABOUT

The Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands is digitalising their collection in high resolution for everyone to download and use in any way without having to ask permission. This is because the copyright of these works have been expired and they feel that everyone should have access to these art pieces.

CREATOR

The platform is created by the Rijksmuseum with Bankgiro Loterij and Cultuurloterij as sponsors. The platform is for open use and every day the Rijksstudio adds photographs. The collection of people making things grows as long as they are using the service.

RULES/RESTRICTIONS

There are no rules and restrictions. You do not even need to sign in to download the published photographs and no permission is needed to use it even for commercial use. The only thing that is notable is that some are not available for commercial use because the copyright is not completely expired.

COMMENTS

I am in love this idea. Art should be for everyone and even though the pictures are made by photographs, they don’t use the copyright which should then actually be on their pictures. They put a lot of effort into it and don’t ask for anything in return. I think this is a beautiful gesture towards open design and the people of the Netherlands. I would really like to use this platform in one of my designs one day and see what possibilities it holds.
