ABOUT
Everyone nows LEGO, with the small bricks you can build everything that’s is on your mind and fantasy.
CREATOR
The official creator of the Lego Group is Ole Kirk Christiansen, he invented the little bricks in 1932 long time ago.
What starts as a tool for kids to build up their fantasy became also a grown up thing.

RULES | RESTRICTIONS
I think there is only one rule: Use the bricks to create your own lego world

COMMENT
Maybe this example is a little bit obvious, but i think Lego is a good example of open design.
Because they invented a platform that all kind of people can use and own.
I think it is more than a toy for children it could also be art.

ABOUT

It is an evolution of the concept of “Cadavre Exquis” in which each collaborator adds to the Collective Art through being allowed to see the end of what the previous artist contributed. Participants are free to choose if they want to paint, draw or scribble their work or just to create it digitally with design software. Anyone was able to participate on the project. You could just sign up on the website:
http://www.redbullcollectiveart.com/nl/how-it-works
Eventually they showcased a 1.3km-long artwork in London that combines graphics, artworks and photography in a giant visual game of Cadavre Exquis. Also they showcased the collection worldwide.

CREATOR

The artists involved come from 85 countries. The full set of artworks can seen on the Red Bull Collective Art website: http://www.redbullcollectiveart.com/

RULES/RESTRICTIONS

The only rule to participate, was to start your artwork at the point where the artist before you ended. It is like the game you used to play when you were younger, you drew a doll with friends, one drew the head, the other drew the belly etc.. and it ended up like a weird doll.

COMMENTS

I think it is a good project, because different artists were able to show their work to the world. Any individual could just sign up and participate.

ABOUT: Dutch designers Daphna Laurens have created a series of storage containers that partially conceal their contents behind metal grilles. The covers can be separated from the bowls to fill them, or they can be used singly as open containers.

CREATOR: Daphna Laurens

RULES: Using material; aluminium and cork to create a series of storage containers.

COMMENTS: I think this is a really clever and nice idea to combine three different materials by creating a totally new kind of containers.

ABOUT: In late December, 2014, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (fictional) Exoplanet Travel Bureau released these 1930s-style travel posters depicting three exoplanets as destinations – hypothetical, so far – for future travel.

CREATOR: NASA´s Exploration Program. Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena CA.

RULES: The posters depict hypothetical scenarios on real planets discovered by NASA‘s Kepler telescope. Each of NASA’s poster designs highlights a feature of a planet that could draw visitors, including stronger gravity for extreme sports and double sunsets.

COMMENTS: I really like these 30´s look posters and I think it is interesting to imagine what life, or holiday, could be on those discovered planets.

ColonelCollection ColonelCollection2 ColonelCollection3

ABOUT: Isabelle Gilles and Yann Poncelet, founders of French design brand Colonel, have prepaired a collection using traditional craft techniques such as woven rattan and marquetry with colourful accents. Colonel´s 2015 collection comprises a sideboard, a wardrobe, a table lamp, a set of pendant lamps and an armchair.

CREATOR: Colonel

RULES /RESTRICTIONS: Their key inspiration for the collection was to use traditional techniques and craftmanship like caning and marquetry and to mix them with light wood and bright colours, to make it more contemporary,

COMMENTS: I really like the collection: it is light and simple but yet really interesting. Furniture has touch of scandinavian style mixed with 60´s style and I love that their main idea was to use traditional techniques and craftmanship.

ABOUT

In order to become a more ‘human-oriented’ brand, Volvo has launched a Facebook application called You Inside. The crowdsourcing application enables fans to post images of the things they keep inside their cars along with info about their vehicles and lifestyles. Volvo analyses the information and delivers a personality profile, with users able to dip into other’s You Inside profiles too. Data gathered by the app on the social network will be fed into research for vehicle development at Volvo.

CREATOR

The campaign/platform has been launched by Volvo itself on Facebook, where the users contribute to the collection by sharing data. Volvo uses the data to create a collective collection.

What makes Volvo Cars unique in the automotive world is its focus on human values in life. Caring about yourself and others; the safety concept encompasses not only the passengers of the car, but also passengers in other cars, and pedestrians. Environmental care goes beyond legislation – and consideration for customers shall imbue the entire company.

RULES / RESTRICTIONS

The user data is limited to their own lifestyle and physical or practical automobile assets, usage and information. The platform operates on Facebook only, so the users need a Facebook account and must agree to their data being shared with others and being used by Volvo for their market and research goals.

COMMENTS

Certain privacy questions arise with this project and it makes me wonder what kind of policy Volvo manages when processing user data. However, I like the philosophy of Volvo for focusing on the personal human experience and their willingness to be actively involved with improving this.

ABOUT/CREATOR

Andres Bhend is a product design student in Switzerland who has before made Ikea hacks with the Frosta stool with Ikea style manuals included which got quite famous. Samuel N. Bernier is a full time worker le FabShop, a 3D printing shop which is based in Paris. They started to collaborate after the writer of a blog post (Ray) made the suggestion in his post.

RULES/RESTRICTIONS

The collections consists out of various 3D printed parts, the original stool and drawings to match the IKEA style to create a draisine. All the parts were made functional over aesthetical. The file is completely open sourced, the reason why it is in orange in the pictures is because this is the colour of le FabShop. The collection is extended with the addition of a Frosta stool DIY sled.

COMMENTS

I think I got sort of brainwashed by Ikea because I had this project on it last quarter which has immediately drawn me to Ikea hacking for this assignment. It is a huge movement of people that are finding ways of redesigning existing Ikea products to create a different use or improve upon them in specific situations. These designers came together and made some products for children which are very easy and cheap to make. The design is posted on the internet for everyone to use so all that has to be done is go to the Ikea, buy the parts and assemble it. I think it is quite a nice way to make easy products for people at home. The only thing is that Ikea actually doesn’t like people hacking their products but I think they should accept it a little bit more. I like this project because it has so much simplicity in it yet it is thought well through and it is made from the restrictions of having a specific set of materials available.
